Our Hear for You service for hard of hearing people is provided by a small team at Gloucestershire Deaf Association.
The Hear for You project was launched in 2009. Its aim is to help bring about an improvement in the quality of life for hard of hearing people in Gloucestershire and raise awareness of their needs in the wider community.
Just over 14% of the population is affected by hearing problems, and about 98% of these fall into the category of hard of hearing. It is estimated that well over 1,000 people in Gloucestershire, many of whom are older adults, require specialist support services and facilities.
Gloucestershire Deaf Association provides a range of services, including some which directly support NHS Gloucestershire's Hearing Services department and also Gloucestershire County Council's Sensory Services team. These are:
- Hearing aid maintenance - cleaning, re-tubing and free provision of new batteries

- Listening Aid Equipment - impartial advice and a 'try before you buy' scheme
- Listening Aid Equipment - home assessment and installation as an option
- Lip reading classes - we run eight classes in the county
- Deaf and Hard of Hearing Awareness Training - tailored training for GP surgery practices, residential and care homes, and retailers.
GDA's Hear for You programme has grown significantly and become an award-winning service in the past two years and we will continue to invest in this important area of our work. We welcome feedback at any time, along with any ideas and suggestions of new services that would benefit hard of hearing people.
